Gums are the most neglected part of our oral cavity. Gum diseases are very much prevalent
in India but since these diseases are very slow progressive and mostly painless or having
mild pain and discomfort, patients come to know of these in advanced stages.
According to studies, patients with gum diseases get more frequent heart troubles as
compared to persons with healthy gums. Also pregnant women with gum diseases are
more likely get premature deliveries or miscarriage and immunity of their child is less as
compared to ladies with healthy gums in their pregnancy.
Gum diseases can be mild, moderate or severe.
Mild: The most common sign of this is occasional bleeding from gums while brushing
and this can be treated by normal cleaning by the dentist.
Moderate : In this stage of gum disease more occasional bleeding, even while eating food
or while biting apples and sometimes accompanied with bad smell and slight mobility of
teeth; gums appear reddish and sometimes gives boggy appearance. This require surgical
intervention and is within treatable limits.
Severe : in this stage patient complaints of severe bleeding of gums, bad breath, loose teeth and
red boggy gums pain and swelling may be present. This stage is very difficult to treat, most
of the times extraction is the only solution left.
